Ioannina: A City That Welcomes You at Every Corner

Ioannina has this magical way of greeting you—every street, every turn, every quick blink feels like discovering something new and beautiful. The lake in the early morning looks like it’s been wrapped in mystery, with soft mist drifting across the water and the occasional fisherman’s boat appearing like a ghost from a storybook.

I started my day wandering through the Old Town, weaving between the castle walls, the silversmiths museum, and a handful of other museums that seem to pop up everywhere you look. Honestly, if it weren’t for the modern cars, cafés, and people in stylish outfits, you’d swear you’d stepped into another century.

And that lake—absolutely captivating. It reminded me of something a visually-impaired acquaintance once told me. By 25 he had lost 90% of his sight, yet he and his wife were avid travellers. One day he said to me: “We’re both travellers, Charlie, but while you travel with your eyes, I travel with my hands. I feel the stone, the bricks, the sweat and tears of the builders and prisoners who shaped these old walls. You should try it.”

So today, I did.

Inside one of the old tunnels—untouched, original, worn by time—I stopped. I placed my hands on the walls, quietened my mind, and just breathed. Without the rush of sight, everything else sharpened. I felt the textures. I noticed the smells. I heard every tiny sound around me.

It was only a moment, but what a moment. And one I truly appreciated.
