Echoes Behind the Walls: A Visit to Ulucanlar Prison Museum

Yesterday I visited the Ulucanlar Prison Museum — incredibly informative and creatively presented, right down to the background audio of daily chatter and sounds that once filled the prison walls. It’s one of those places that quietly pulls you into the past while you wander through.

Ulucanlar Prison originally opened in 1925, after first being built as a military depot in 1923, and went on to serve as Ankara’s main prison for decades, holding a mix of political prisoners, intellectuals, and criminals.

It operated until 2006, before being carefully restored and reopened as a museum in 2011, preserving over 80 years of modern Turkish history inside its walls.
