From Horse & Cart to Tractors

Just down the road was the annual Mennonite folk festival, held on their beautiful community property.

The festival started 37 years ago when Marilyn was 25. She took a horse and cart along, despite having absolutely no idea how to put the harness together or give the horses directions!

Luckily, Gerhard came to her rescue — and 37 years later, they’re happily married. So perhaps that horse and cart deserves some credit for bringing them together!

Today, four tractors pulling trailers took visitors around the enormous property. It’s amazing how little of the land has actually been developed.

I also noticed nobody was taking photographs. Manuela explained that the Mennonites are quite private. If families want photos, they simply go somewhere away from the crowds and take them privately.

Lunch was delicious — proper roast chicken and roast lamb, rice salad, bread rolls and little crunchy baked balls that apparently can be stored for months. And thankfully, no chicken feet or heads today!

I cycled the seven kilometres each way, got slightly lost coming home, but eventually made it back.

A lovely morning of Mennonite traditions, good food and a little adventure!
