The Pages We Have Yet to Read

We never really know what is written on the next page of our lives. Sometimes, a decision that seems insignificant at the time can take on a whole new meaning when we look back, while other events arrive without warning and change everything in an instant.

Marylin told me about a well-liked Mennonite gentleman, a lifelong friend of hers in his early sixties, who had originally planned to join her on the expedition to Cerro Cabrera. He is a fit and active man who would likely have had little difficulty with the physical challenge of reaching the summit. However, at the last moment, he decided not to come.

Looking back, that decision took on a different significance. The expedition itself had been affected by some unfortunate decisions made by the guides, with consequences that touched everyone in one way or another. Yet none of them could have imagined what lay ahead for Marylin’s friend.

The following Friday afternoon, while driving through town, he was involved in a tragic accident in which he struck a young boy, the son of a priest, who was returning home from school.

We happened to be in town on the Monday afternoon when the community gathered for the funeral. It was deeply moving to see so many people come together to mourn the loss of a young life. Behind every tragedy are lives forever changed: the family grieving a child taken far too soon, and a man who must now live with the enormous emotional weight of what happened.

My heart goes out to both families. There are no easy words for such sorrow, and no simple explanation that can make sense of it. Sometimes, life places people in circumstances they could never have imagined, leaving them to find a way forward one day at a time.

It was a sobering reminder that we can make plans, prepare for adventures and believe we know what tomorrow holds, yet the next page remains unwritten to us. Perhaps that is why kindness matters so much. We rarely know what burdens another person is carrying, or how dramatically an ordinary day might change their life.
