As my time here slowly tiptoes towards the exit, I can’t help but feel a little wistful. Sadly, the weather has decided not to play nice over the past week — and it looks like it plans to continue.
Because of that, the Lycian Way will have to wait for another day. Instead, I’m heading off on a different adventure — a Workaway in central Turkey, in a western suburb of Ankara in the Anatolia region. For the next two weeks, I’ll be a “fitness buddy” to a lovely lady who’s looking for company on her walks and a bit of encouragement to shed a few kilos. Honestly, the timing couldn’t be better.
Turkush breads are dangerously good. Every meal comes with fresh bread. And sometimes Gulifan, who cooks our meals, makes a special fried bread that’s similar to Maori fry bread back in New Zealand. One piece is never enough. Fast-forward a month, and the bread has officially started making itself known on my body.
Saying no is easy in theory — actually verbalising it is another story entirely.
With my three months in Turkey coming to an end on the 28th of February, the plan is two weeks in central Turkey, then perhaps a couple of weeks around Çanakkale in the north to take in Gallipoli as well.
It’s always exciting to be moving on — new places, new stories — but there’s no denying the bittersweet side of it too. Goodbyes are never easy, especially when animals are involved.
