Zagreb is a bit of a puzzle for me – there are things I adore and things I wrestle with. I love that cafés here are unapologetically about coffee and tea. That’s it. No cakes, no sandwiches – just drinks. If you’re hungry, you pop into a bakery, or you bring your own snack, and no one bats an eyelid. It’s refreshingly simple.
On the flip side, I struggle with the pedestrian crossings. Back home in NZ and Australia, the crossings beep so people who are blind or colour blind know when it’s safe to step off the curb. Here in Zagreb, silence. It’s one of those small details that makes a huge difference to many people – and reminds me how much we take those little beeps for granted.
