Paraguay’s weather seems to be having a little identity crisis. My first few days were beautiful—sunshine and temperatures happily sitting in the high 20s to 35°C. Then yesterday arrived, and suddenly summer disappeared. The temperature struggled to reach 23°C and the skies opened up, producing heavy, steady rain throughout the night. Thankfully, it eased this morning.
So what better day for a seven-hour bus ride?
One thing I certainly hadn’t appreciated before arriving was just how incredibly flat Paraguay is. Looking out the bus window, there are no mountains competing for attention—just miles and miles of open landscape. It actually made me think back to 2017, when I tried to enter Paraguay but the borders were closed because of serious flooding. Suddenly, that makes a lot more sense!
The highways today were actually pretty good—nothing particularly exciting, but generally in decent condition. That all changed when we turned towards Filadelfia.
Suddenly, clay and mud appeared to be the road-building materials of choice!
Marilyn was supposed to pick me up today, but unfortunately the roads are currently too muddy for her to get through. Apparently, she’ll try again tomorrow.
And if we still can’t make it through? Well… looks like I may be staying at Marilyn’s house in town here.
